CAMPAIGN TITLE: ‘GET BRITAIN MULCHING’
LAUNCH DATE: 26.09.26
Initial site for 1st Launch: The Holkham Estate, NR23 1AB Autumn Garden & Outdoor Living Fair.
2026 has presented Britain’s home gardeners and growers with one of their most damaging summers in living memory. Weeks of extreme and repetitive heatwaves, together with unprecedented levels of drought, have caused immeasurable harm to plants, crops and wildlife throughout the country and provided us all with a stark reminder of the rapidly changing climate, and what could likely become normal for future summers.
And if this is to be the case, then we must be prepared to cope with extreme temperatures and insufficient rainfall, and to mitigate the impact it will undoubtedly have on Britain’s environment, our homes, gardens, farms, countryside, and native wildlife.
Britain has around 23 million private gardens, that collectively cover more area than all of Britain’s official nature reserves, and so finding effective ways to protect the plants, homegrown produce, and wildlife within these gardens during heatwaves and drought will be of immense benefit to Britain.
Key to this will be water conservation which, besides the traditional method of collecting and storing rainwater in butts, should now involve reducing the rapid evaporation of water from soils during heatwaves.
And to drive this hugely important requirement for the future health of Britain’s gardens, a campaign entitled ‘Get Britain Mulching’ is being initiated and led by the Norfolk company PlantGrow Ltd., who have teamed up with leading experts in the fields of garden design, horticulture, conservation, and entomology.
ABOUT THE CAMPAIGN
Launching the Get Britain Mulching campaign is in response to this year’s heatwaves and drought, which are now likely to become a regular occurrence during future summers. The campaign will alert gardeners and growers whose garden plants and crops suffered over this summer, that applying mulch on soils during spring and autumn, will be essential from now on. Good quality mulches will not only provide essential nutrition to soils but help to protect plants and their roots, the vital soil flora & fauna, and conserve ground water during future heatwaves and droughts.
Having spent many years developing high quality soil improvers & organic materials PlantGrow have, with the support of many independent growers, gardeners, and professional horticulturalists revealed that there’s a lot more to mulching than just adding a topping to exposed garden soil. PlantGrow Manager, Daniel Suggitt, said: “Over the past ten years, we have seen consistent results, with gardeners reporting stronger growth and healthier plants. As summers become hotter and drought conditions more frequent, PlantGrow can offer significant benefits, performing in ways that traditional mulches simply cannot.”
PlantGrow are obviously delighted to be leading this campaign to Get Britain Mulching, supported by independent experts in their respective fields, who not only endorse the campaign, but have been successfully trialling and evaluating PlantGrow’s uniquely produced mulches over several years. Together, our independent experts corroborate the fact that our unique organic mulch provides an unrivalled opportunity for gardeners and growers to prepare for an uncertain future of extreme climatic events and protect their plants, soils and associated organisms during future heatwaves & droughts.

WHY PLANTGROW
Mulching That Works With Nature
Organic matter is an essential part of healthy soil, and regularly adding it can help create better growing conditions and support strong plant growth and yields.
PlantGrow has developed a carefully selected blend of crops and grasses to create a mulch that delivers all the traditional benefits gardeners expect, while offering far more additional benefits designed to improve the health and performance of the soil.
What makes PlantGrow different is its unique two-stage process. Initially, the mulch remains on the surface of the soil, providing protection and helping to retain moisture while suppressing weeds. Over time, it naturally begins to break down and move into the soil, where the second stage begins – helping to enhance soil health and support stronger, healthier plant growth.

ENDORSEMENTS
Alan Gray, broadcaster & writer
“At last, we are learning, with the help of PlantGrow, the importance of mulching, Don’t miss this chance to get ahead of the game and help to keep your garden growing whilst others watch theirs shrivel”.
Dr Ian Bedford, Entomologist and Wildlife-Friendly Gardening advocate.
“Using and evaluating PlantGrow mulch in my garden over recent years has produced astonishing results. Unlike other products I have used, the mulch rapidly transforms my dry sandy soil into a wonderful fibrous growing substrate. Plants are benefitting, and a healthy community of soil dwelling invertebrates can be found within the soil where they naturally recycle nutrients from the organic matter. Conserving water within the soil is another important aspect of using a mulch, reducing the need to water plants, which will clearly benefit a garden ecosystem during future droughts.”
Martin Fish, Garden writer & broadcaster
“To help our gardens and plants cope with hot dry summers and wet winters mulching plays a very important role. In summer a mulch of organic matter helps to keep the soil cool and reduces evaporation, benefiting our plants. In winter is acts as insulation and improves the soil structure by adding organic matter. This in turn feeds the soil and improves drainage”.
Steve Bustin, Hardy Plant Society
“When you’re growing hardy plants, tuck them into bed with a good mulch in Autumn then wake them up again in the Spring with another nutritious mulch! Mulching is such a no-brainer for plant and soil health – yet many gardeners either forget or ignore their poor soil, to the detriment of their plants. It’s also becoming more and more important as a way of locking moisture into the soil and protecting those delicate roots from our increasingly hot, dry summers”.
Andy Tudbury, Multi-award winning designer and Head Gardener at Belvoir Castle
“In the ever-changing weather climate of extremes, we now find ourselves working and living in, our gardens need all the help we can give them. Using a good quality organic mulch around your plants provides not only weed suppression but adds nutrients to your soil and retains moisture. Easily applied to your beds it is fast becoming the ‘go to’ for many gardeners”.
Susan Morgan, SongBird Survival CEO
“SongBird Survival is the only charity in the UK solely dedicated to halting the alarming decline of songbirds. It funds independent scientific research that aims to better understand the reasons why UK songbird populations have fallen by 50% in just two generations, and to identify practical solutions to help them recover and thrive.Research, funded by SongBird Survival found that bird populations in gardens plummeted by up to 40% where pesticides were present. We can all play a part in protecting songbirds by making our gardens more wildlife-friendly – providing native plants, food and water sources, and shelter. Improving soil health by using a pesticide-free mulch brings many benefits for insects, birds, and other wildlife, helping to create healthier ecosystems. Avoiding the use of pesticides can make a measurable difference to the number and variety of birds we may see in our gardens. We are very pleased to support PlantGrow’s Get Britain Mulching campaign. By encouraging more people to adopt wildlife-friendly practices, the campaign can help gardeners to create thriving habitats for songbirds across the UK”.
