Compost, Mulch & Raised Bed Soil Calculator

Not sure how much compost, mulch or soil to order? Enter the length and width of your bed, border or raised bed, choose a depth, and our free calculator will work out the volume in litres. It will then recommend the right PlantGrow product and how many bags you need.

Approximate area

Garden beds come in all shapes and sizes, so this is an estimate. If your area is irregular, measure the longest length and widest width, then round up slightly to be safe.

What depth should I use?

  • Mulching beds and borders: 5–8cm to hold in moisture and suppress weeds
  • Improving existing soil: 5–10cm, forked into the top layer or left on the surface for no-dig beds
  • Filling a new raised bed: the full depth of the bed, plus a little extra because the mix settles
  • Lawn top dressing: up to 2cm in low spots, raked and brushed into the grass

Handy rule of thumb: 1m² at 1cm deep needs 10 litres.
