Why do you need to add PlantGrow mulch this Autumn?
Mulching or topdressing is needed for a number of reasons as it is beneficial for your plants, the soil and the environment.
Having organic material on top of soils will moisten the top layer of the ground which can be very important for clay soils as the organic material would be drawn in naturally breaking up the existing soil. Unique PlantGrow organic Mulch works very well with all soil types as it provides essential nutrients along with soil microbes & natural healthy bacteria, something that is not present in many other mulches.
Remember, your plants are greedy and will drain the goodness from the soil. PlantGrow, first used for farm use knows what plants need for a healthier life. By working with nature we have created a product that soils and plants love plus one that is completely natural so you can have the re-assurance to know your plants have only been grown with our plant-based product.
Mulching is easy as no digging is needed, this keeps carbon in the soil and works with the existing life within the soil over time. Worms add to this process by moving the organic material around creating air pockets as they blend the organic matter with the current soil.
Another benefit of an organic mulch is it will work with various weather patterns, from wet weather by absorbing the water and holding moisture, to drought conditions keeping soils protected and keeping the goodness and moisture in the soil.
Mulching is also recommended for weed reduction. Long term annual applications will get your soils producing MORE fruit, flowers and vegetables due to the long term feeding within the plant material and the way it works with nature, improving the microbiome of the soil.
No-dig gardening with PlantGrow has many benefits;
- Stronger plants: No-dig gardening preserves the organisms that live in the soil, which helps plants grow stronger.
- Earlier harvests: No-dig gardening allows you to start planting and sowing earlier because the soil warms up faster.
- No synthetic fertilizers or weedkillers: No-dig gardening doesn’t require synthetic fertilizers or weedkillers.
- Soil health: PlantGrow No-dig gardening improves soil health by preserving beneficial fungal networks and increasing natural bacteria activity improving the soil microbiome.
- Carbon storage: No-dig gardening helps lock carbon into the soil, which helps fight climate change.
- Fewer weeds: No-dig gardening reduces weeds because digging can expose weed seeds and roots to the surface where they can germinate.
- Improved drainage: PlantGrow has been endorsed by Anglian Water as it improves drainage and water retention saving huge amounts during warmer months.
- Reduced labor: No-dig gardening can reduce labor by at least 40%.
Creating your new No Dig area;
Timing – Adding PlantGrow mulch for the ‘NO dig’ method requires a resting period and needs to be started 2 months before you are looking to plant into your new area. This gives enough time for the cardboard to biodegrade into the soil plus the organic material to be drawn downwards helped by the earthworms.
1. Choose an area which is relatively flat. You may wish to create wooden edges for tidiness.
2. Add cardboard over your area – this cuts out sunshine to any weeds or growth below. It does not matter if the card overlaps slightly.
3. Water the cardboard so it will breakdown more quickly.
4. Add a thick layer of PlantGrow Mulch 4- 6 inches. PlantGrow Compost could also work as it contains 40% award-winning organic mulch fibre.
5. Even out the material using a rake.
6. Leave the material for 2 months before planting, this allows the organic material to be drawn into the soil creating an ample and nutritious soil.
