As another year in the garden comes to a close, it is the perfect opportunity to take stock of the 2021 season. What were your stand-out crops? Did you do anything differently this year that you would do again? Are there any crops you wouldn’t want to grow again?
Although the days on the plot might be gentler and slower, there’s still lots to be getting on with – mulching, cleaning tools, taking inventory of garden kit and caring for overwintering crops.
Here are some tips from us:
- Clear any spent and dying crops from the veg bed now – you can compost healthy plants and dispose of those that look diseased.
- Make the most of the dormant season by pruning fruit trees to encourage productive harvests next year. You’ll need to wrap up warm, but it’s a great chance to prepare for the next growing season. It’s also the perfect time to take hardwood cuttings.
Remember to also take the time to appreciate what you achieved throughout the year. Even those veg that didn’t grow, pest attacks and bolted lettuce – they all represent time well spent in an environment that is great for both your physical and mental health.
